Tesla’s robotaxi service, launched in Austin, Texas, in June 2025, has been involved in 14 crashes as the automaker disclosed to federal safety regulators. NHTSA data shows five recent incidents happened in December and January, causing property damage but no injuries, while two crashes in July and October 2025 led to minor injuries. In these accidents, the robotaxis collided with other vehicles or fixed objects, and Tesla has not responded to requests for comment yet.

Shortly after the robotaxi pilot started in Austin, NHTSA launched an investigation into its erratic driving, including wrong-way travel and sudden braking, following the emergence of related videos. Tesla is expanding its autonomous vehicle business: CEO Elon Musk stressed a future focused on autonomy, including the under-development Cybercab, and plans to launch robotaxis in seven U.S. cities in the first half of 2026, expanding to half of U.S. states by year-end.

Tesla is not the only one facing robotaxi safety problems. Waymo, Alphabet’s driverless ride-hailing service, recalled over 1,200 driverless cars in 2025 due to faulty software causing crashes with barriers. In January, a Waymo car hit a child in Santa Monica, resulting in minor injuries. Automakers with automated driving systems must report crash data to NHTSA, which can remove unsafe vehicles from roads if defects are found.

并非只有特斯拉面临自动驾驶出租车安全问题。谷歌母公司 Alphabet 旗下的自动驾驶网约车服务 Waymo，2025 年因软件故障导致车辆与障碍物相撞，召回了 1200 多辆无人驾驶汽车。今年 1 月，一辆 Waymo 车辆在圣莫尼卡撞上一名儿童，造成轻微受伤。配备自动驾驶系统的汽车制造商必须向美国国家公路交通安全管理局报告碰撞数据，若发现安全缺陷，该机构可责令不安全车辆下架。
